Before I was an entrepreneur, I imagined being discovered by a company who was looking to hire me. In my fantasy, work was full of fun, friendship, and flexibility. Maybe I was born too soon, since working like a millennial had not even been invented yet! More and more companies are creating millennial-centered company cultures, and they appear to be focused on flexibility, at least from the outside. So you’ll want to look deeper.
HubSpot is an example. If you’re looking for a company that offers “whenever, wherever, whatever” work, you might like to work at this inbound-marketing powerhouse. While it can sound a bit like a vacation on the job at HubSpot, with food, drink, social time and show up-when-you-want hours, it’s a company. You’ll still need to produce and persevere at work. Getting ahead is a bit tricky, too. Great social intelligence is a must, and you’ll want to explore the culture of the company before and not after you find out that it’s not for you.
What’s another great strength to have when you work like a millennial? Judgment. You’ll need it as you maneuver through the choices you’ll have: Will you resist the temptation to play instead of work, sleep in instead of arrive early, and imbibe instead of abstain? Even outside of that company-provided gym, you’ll really benefit from exercising your self-regulation muscle. Before you decide to work like a millennial, be sure you have the strengths it takes.
